Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was then in charge for Island/Def Jam. Reid then signed Decker to a recording contract. In August 2009, she released her first self-titled album, titled Jessie James. Jessie James achieved a reasonable degree of success and had Wanted reaching the Top 40 charts. Decker has always been a country performer, but the album was released and promoted was designed with pop audiences in mind. Decker battled against the label for more control of her music after two of her singles did not succeed. Her next release, Boys in the Summer, was more country oriented. Decker's album was titled Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was pulled by Mercury when two of her singles failed to chart on the country charts.
